This was a very interesting project that we undertook for a really nice Dutch client living in Galway. He had a very large back garden that was on a slope and wanted to do something special with it. So he (Walter) sat down and designed this.
To begin with, the structure was built in block and then the garden was split into different ground levels. This meant that in places the structure is only 3 feet high (when looking from the house, your eye sees this lower section), while in others its the equivalent of one story high.
As can be seen, its basically a union of a large circle (affectionately known as 'The Sun Trap') and a rectangle. The circular area was specifically positioned so that it would catch the sunlight at certain time of day (you can see a hammock in one of the pictures), while the rectangle area gets it best during the evening. There is a wonderful 'Newgrange' / Megalithic feel to it.
Its an outdoor entertainment area that the whole family can use, be it for a dinner party, to relax and read a book, or just to chill. It provides privacy, and really is a fantastic structure to have in your back garden. We all should have one :)
