Hammers
Stone is dressed using simple tools, some of which have been in use in the trade of stone masonry for centuries.
The main tool in the stone masons arsenal is a selection of 'club' hammers of various weights and sizes, depending on preference.
A hammer with a straight square face is optimal, as opposed to a curved or rounder hammer face, - as you can create a clean straight line on the stone.
This is especially noticeable when working on creating the cornerstone (as the name suggests, a right angled stone of 90 degrees, which has two faces, and with a straight line which separates the faces.)
Chisels
Stonemason 'punch'
The next tool that is invaluable in shaping stone to the desired form are the chisels. Made from a high grade, specially hardened steel with a 'tungsten' tip. These are extremely tough chisels, and have excellent longevity. Two types most commonly used, 'pointer' or punch, and 'pitcher'.
(a) The pointer has a cylindrical pointed tungsten tip and is invaluable in removing unwanted lumps and bumps from the stone, which leaves a flat and smooth top and base enabling a very snug fit to the proceeding and former stone, thus creating a neat tight joint.
(b) The Pitcher: can largely be used in fusion with or instead of the straight edge hammer for dressing the stone face, creating a 'two tone' effect, and also for splitting the stone to a desired length or shape.
Also, one can use a con-saw for creating a very specific designs. An example of this is where one is used for constructing a archway over windows and doorways. It is also used for cutting certain sections of awkward stone to specific angels, as in the example of the left and right side of the stone fireplaces done in the sandstone and limestone in the gallery.
